Password expiration

From AgriLife WIki

As you all know, we will soon begin to expire NDS passwords. Below is a rough draft of an istruction sheet which gives some general information about passwords, as well as specific instructions on changing one's various passwords.

Please feel free to edit this document if you see something that might be changed to make things easier for our users. There is a difficult balance betweeen giving accurate informations the users need to know and getting overly technical and confusing the users. The discussion page might be an excellent place where we can all discuss how to improve this document.

The better we can make it, the easier all of our lives will be when the passwords actually begin to expire. Also, this document actually exists in .doc format, so it uses slightly better formating and color-coding and is a bit more readable.

OK, so here we go:

Password Information for Agriculture Program Employees

Due to new security requirements all of us will be required to change our Novell passwords at least every 180 days. In order to enforce this requirement Novell passwords will begin to expire soon. This means that you will not be able to log into the server until you have changed your password. Notice that, at least for now, this only applies to your Novell password. Since we all have more and more passwords these days let’s just take a quick look at the main passwords we have:

Novell Password (also called NDS password) – This is the password which you use in order to get access to the server drives (e.g. S: and W: drive). This is almost always the very first password you enter after starting up your computer. You enter it here:

This is the password which will expire!

Windows Workstation Password – The users who have a computer running Windows XP or 2000 also have a Windows Workstation Password. This is the password that allows you to get into your computer. Many of you may have never had to enter this password however, if your username and password for Novell and Windows match, Windows will simply use what you entered for the Novell login screen. This password does have to be answered one way or another however. Without entering this password you will not even be able to see your desktop.

GroupWise Password – Obviously, this is the password that lets you into your GroupWise e-mail. This password can be different from your Novell and Workstation passwords, but many users use the same password for both.

NEO Password – This is a password to the Texas A&M NEO system. Access to the NEO system is required for various campus services, such as parking.

HRConnect Password – This is a password that gives access to the various HRConnect systems, such as LeaveTraq.

FAMIS Password – Users of the FAMIS system have a password solely for that purpose.

So how will I know when my Novell password will expire?

Your Novell password will expire before the end of February. When your password is within a few days of expiring, you will receive a note during the logon process. It will look like this:

This window will not go away until you press a key to make sure that you see it.

OK, so my password expires in a few days, what should I do?

The best thing to do is change your password right away. This way, you’ll have it changed before your password actually expires and won’t have to mess with it again for another 6 months.

Great, so how do I do that?

(Note: If your password has already expired, skip these steps and go to the next section.)

1. Think of a new password. Make sure it is something that you can remember, but that will still be a strong and secure password. Here are some quick tips:

     a.	At least 8 letters (this is now required)
     b.	Contain some “special” characters, such as @,# or &.
     c.	Does not contain dictionary words (in any language or names)
     d.
     e.

2. When you’re ready, hit the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys simultaneously. You will then see the following window:

3. Click Change Password. The following window will then appear:

4. On the left side (under Resource), click on each item that appears while holding the Ctrl key. All of the items (usually two) will now be highlighted. 5. Type your Old Password in the appropriate blank, then hit the Tab key. 6. Type your new password twice in the appropriate blanks, using the Tab key to move between them. When these blanks are filled in:

Click OK.

8. You should see the following message:

If you do not see this message, contact your computer support specialist for help.

9. That’s it, you’re done. This process has changed both your Novell and Windows Workstation passwords. Changing your Windows Workstation password at the same time allows you to enter only one password when you login. As stated above, if your Novell and Windows Workstation information match, your computer logs you into Windows automatically.

Oops, I waited too long and my password has expired, what do I do now?

(Follow these steps only if you did not complete the above procedure. If you completed that procedure, skip this section).
