Instructors Guide Photo Story Introductory Class

Supplies: Computer(s) with Photostory 3 installed and updated Windows Media Player Projector Microphone or Headset with Microphone (for narration demo)

Handouts Simple Exericse Handout Copy of “Tell your Story with Pictures” from the Tech Ops BLOG Files needed for students (in case they do not bring their own): Example Photostory 4 to 6 jpg photos 1 or 2 background music files

Opening Comments: Digital photos have become a standard. We commonly take a batch of photos, way too many most of the time, at an event and often want to display them right away. Commly we import them into PowerPoint or just show them with whatever we have. Well, here's a tool to help you make the most of those photos and display them in a snazzy show! The price is great too – Free! Welcome to Photostory

  • Start and example Photostory here and let it play while you go over the instructions.

Session Instructions: You can get PhotoStory online from Microsoft Downloads http://www.microsoft.com/downloads or we have copies at workshop.

Photostory is easy to learn and use. Let's jump in. I will walk you through it, you can follow along. After that you will have an exercise to follow that will lead through again for more practice

Walk Through (Let them follow you, other instructors can float around room and help):

1. Start Photostory

2. Choose Begin a new story <NEXT>

3. Import Pictures

  • Navigate to the workshop folder and choose 4 photos <ok>
  • Point out Tools under main view window
    • Color Correction
    • Red Eye Correction
    • Rotate Options
    • Edit (Crop, Rotate, Autofix, Effects)
  • Point out TimeLine and its use to rearrange pictures
  • Point out "Remove Black Borders" option
  • Point out Save Project and explain
  • Click "Remove Black Borders"
  • Demonstrate how it works. <NEXT>

4. Add Titles

  • Point out where to type title
  • Point out alignment and Font tools
  • Point out the effects again
  • Put a title in for one photo & Explain you can do each one

5. Narration and Custom Motion

  • Click the Preview button at this point to show what Photo Story wants to do.
  • Click Custom Motion Button and Demonstrate how to adjust Be sure to SAVE each change
  • Close the custom motion
  • Point out the Configure microphone and set volume option
  • Point out the record / stop record button
  • Point out the Transitions Tab and Demonstrate

6. Add Background Music

  • Be sure to mention Copyright issues here
  • Point out Select Music - to use music files stored on your computer
    • Have the something available - like Highway Blues
  • Point out the Create music feature
    • Demo this feature picking a Style, a Band, and a Mood
    • Point out the Tempo and Intensity settings
    • Use the Play option to Demo
  • Use OK to add to project

7. Save Your Story

  • Point out again Save Project and explain again the difference between Save and Save Project
  • Point out save options
    • Pick Save your story for playback on your computer
    • Point out Location and file name
    • Point out Quality Settings - BREIFLY explain why you might use these
  • Click Next to build the PhotoStory

8. Completing the Story

  • Point out filename and location
  • Point out View Story
  • Exit to get out of Photo Story

That’s it. Now have them completely exit PhotoStory and start over using the Exercise and the BLOG handout as reminders. Ask them to keep it simple and give them a time to be finished.


Learn Photo Story Exercise

Word Version Download: Learn Photo Story Exercise

1. Start Photo Story

  • Start > All Programs > Photo Story 3 for Windows

2. Import 4 Photos from your files or from the provided examples folder

3. Use the “Remove black borders” option to clean up pictures

4. Add a Title to the first Slide

  • Change Font Color to White
  • Move title to an appropriate location

5. Use the Customize Motion option to add motion to your photos

  • Add a transitions here if you like them

6. Narrate the first slide: (if you have a microphone available)

  • “Welcome to ______________________________________________”

7. Add some background music.

  • There are 2 example music files in the examples folder you can add
  • Or use the create music option to make your own

8. Save the Project. (Optional, but needed if you plan on editing later)

9. Save the Story for playback – Choose “Save your story for playback on your computer”

Now sit back and watch the show.
