Just a few comments:

  • As part of these strategies, the VEC (or another special task force)might consider putting together a set of guidelines, standards, or other "rules of the game". The "freedom" of strategy 1 is fine, but can also lead to the kind of thing we currently have in our web pages. Everyone feels so free to do what they want, and grasp at any process or tool that comes along, that we get into this mish-mash of products. The kind of guidelines I'm talking about not only put sideboards on what they might consider doing, but do help provide focus and tools to get them started down the right path. One example, although it is pretty elementary, is given on pp 6-8 of the CECP Guidebook. This could also include some institutional requirements like need for logos and other elements required by section 206 of the Texas Administrative Code. It could further get into some pretty specific things like what types and sizes (compression rates) of media files are acceptable, what size and type of graphic files are OK to use, etc.
  • For those folks wanting to put together online courses, there is another alternative available which we have yet to test. FDRM has an online course system that they built in-house which their faculty are relatively pleased with. Judy Warren and Carol Rice have offered to share that system if the agency would want to use it as an alternative to CECP. This might be a simpler tool we could put into peoples' hands; deserves further exploration.
  • The acquisition and implementation of the LSU CMS will go a long way to support some of these projects, particularly where the need is to get some content onto the web. This will allow the agency resources to focus more on projects where specialized applications are required. However, the idea that people need to "apply" for the use of agency resources, just as they apply for support in getting things published, is probably good. And, I think the selection of which projects the agency supports needs to be determined by SALT, with serious input by AgComm and EIT into the technical feasibility of pulling them off.
  • Overall, I think you have captured the "elephant" fairly well, addressing the full range of needs we have. You don't necessarily have to make any changes to the document before you present it; just include any of these comments if you think they fit.
